Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH): What It Is and What It Is Not

What is Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH)?

Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) is one of the top three certifications obtained by assessing the security of computer systems, using penetration testing techniques.

Penetration tests are sought after by organizations that hire certified ethical hackers to penetrate networks and computer systems with the purpose of finding and resolving security vulnerabilities. In a CEH training course, you will learn best practices for ethical hacking, penetration testing and vulnerability management. CyberWarrior Academy’s unique Part-Time virtual instructor-led CEH Course is designed to teach solutions to the key issues plaguing information security teams and incident management processes.

Students learn:

  • Network scanning techniques & countermeasures
  • Packet sniffing/ Firewall/ IDS and evasion techniques & countermeasures
  • Social engineering techniques & countermeasures
  • DoS/DDoS attack techniques & tools
  • SQL injection attacks & tools
  • Wireless Encryption/tools and Mobile platform vulnerabilities & tools
  • And more…

The code for the CEH exam is 312-50, and the certification is in Version 10 as of April 2018.

What is it not?

The CEH certification covers a lot of material. From foot printing to reconnaissance to session hijacking to Python to hacking mobile platforms to cryptography to… the list goes on. That said, CEH will provide knowledge at a high level across several topics as well as provide access to tools and labs for you to acquire a clear understanding of pen testing techniques. Earning a CEH certification is widely considered to be a solid foundation for building a career in information security — even for those not interested in becoming Penetration Testers or Ethical Hacking Consultants.

I Want to Get Started, Now What?

Let’s quickly touch on test structure & what happens post-exam so you understand what to expect. The CEH certification exam takes 4 hours to complete and is comprised of 125 multiple choice questions. You’ll be notified of having passed or failed promptly after completing the exam with a digital certificate being provided within a week.

Now, onto preparation.

If you’re not working in Infosec and are interested in preparing for the exam, the most recommended action path is taking a training program taught by certified instructors. Even better yet, take a program that is taught by Pen Testers or other Cybersecurity professionals (versus instructors with limited/outdated field experience). Since CEH is one of the most information-rich certifications, many Certified Ethical Hackers recommend reading the V9 edition CEH book or taking free video courses on Cybrary prior to starting a training program. Cybrary, for example, features videos on: penetration testing, ethical hacking, using Metasploit and even Python. No matter the prep style you choose, the best advice is:
